Simply divine cheese & onion rolls

Hi friends,

Since 2005, I get up really early every day, even in weekends. I used be one of those night people when I was a student. Socialising until midnight, drinking till dawn and so on.

Not anymore. Such way of living has completely disappeared from my life since I have started seeing the consequences in the following morning. It is really scary to look at my face in the mirror in the natural morning light.  It is almost horror to me.

Lots of people asked me what I am doing alone from early morning without TV or DVD player at home. Well, would I watch TV at 5:00am if I had it at home?

I have already lived half of my life and I just want to make me happy with life’s small blessings. Rubbishy programmes on TV or being lazy in bed till noon doesn’t particularly work on me.

Instead, I decided to spend bit more time for daily essentials. Eating and grooming are one of them.
Yes, eating. I baked these bread rolls for breakfast.

Really easy to make, but the result is just fabulous. Try this one if you are a baking novice.

It says, all you need is this mix and 315 ml of lukewarm water. (you need a bit of plain flour as well.)

315 ml water. I use this scale.
I know grams and litres are different but if it is water, you can treat 1g as 1ml. (Not other liquids, though) This scale came from Tesco more than 7 years ago. I cannot remember exactly how much I paid, but it did not cost me more than £3. I don’t like spending a lot on the things I don’t use on a daily basis. £3 for 7 years, not bad investment, is it?

When you start mixing the dough, you might feel tempted to add some more water. Don’t. It will be just fine if you keep mixing for another 5 minutes.

Follow the instruction. It is very simple.
What I do is, measuring the weight of dough before I make small dough balls.
It weighed 791g. OK, if I make 10 rolls, 1 roll should weigh 79g. You don’t need to be precise, and can make any size of rolls you like. It is just me who likes anything “looking neat”.

The instruction on the packet says, put the dough in a loaf tin or rolls on a greased tray. I use a muffin tray like this. Baking requires 230 ̊c, so it is real high heat cooking. My recommendation is always Avocado Oil to avoid the baddie called “trans fat”.

Cover it with a cling film loosely and leave it for 30 – 40 minutes.

Then, I load the washing machine with laundry. They should be nicely washed in 45 minutes. Whilst I am waiting for my dough and laundry, it is time for me to have a cup of lovely green tea.

Rolls will be almost double-sized in 40 minutes.

Then, put the tray in the oven and wait for 20 minutes. (the instruction says 15 minutes, it depends on the size of the rolls and your oven.) This is the happiest moment out of the whole baking process looking at them being lovely golden brown.

Again, the instruction says to cool them on the wire rack. I don’t have a cake rack. I have no intention of buying it either. Although it is slightly shorter, the wire tray in the grill tray will do a good job.
Why are there 9 rolls?

Hee hee. Why do I have to cool them? They are simply divine when they are just baked.
